Most private investigators are trained to perform physical surveillance,
particularly in a car or van for a long period of time-for example
observing a subject’s home from an inconspicuous location.
Another facet of the job of a private investigator which is also a
technique that they are required to learn is to do computer database
searches which allow them to attain massive information on their
subjects quite quickly.
Many private investigators are hired by insurance companies to observe a
subject who is claiming an injury. The private investigator is sent to
survey a subject to determine if they are truly injured or if they are
fraudulently claiming their injury with the insurance company as a scam.
As a private investigator, you must also learn how to collect, and
preserve evidence.
Many private investigators specialize in different areas of
investigating and surveillance including:
Legal private investigators who are normally employed by lawyers or law
firms. Legal investigators often assist in the preparation of criminal
defenses, locating witnesses, interviewing witnesses and police,
gathering and reviewing evidence and serving legal documentation. Legal
private investigators may also testify in court as to their surveillance
and investigative findings.
Corporate private investigators work for other investigative firms and
for corporations doing internal and external investigations. As an
internal private investigator they may investigate expense account
usage, employees, and drug use in the work place. External
investigations typically preventing criminal schemes that occur outside
of the corporation. Related training is often provided to the private
investigators for a corporation by the corporation as an added education
for the purpose the corporation is hiring the private investigator.
Financial private investigators are often hired to develop financial
profiles of companies or individuals who may be a party to a large
financial transaction. Often Financial private investigators are also
Certified Public Accountants.
There are also private investigators who work as loss control and asset
protection for retail stores and hotels.
