Private Investigators use a wide variety of techniques in which they
conduct their investigations. Some of these techniques include
surveillance, research, and background checks to name a few. However,
the majority of all cases are solved through time-consuming process of
interviewing suspects and witnesses, other wise known as legwork. As a
police officer, a private investigator acquires a perceptive sense of
plausibly suspect as well as credible witness. There will be times
however that this intuition fails yet for the most part it is most
reliable.
Private investigators also relay on other means of discovering evidence,
such as relying on a network of contacts and informants, which the PI
may have cultivated for years. Contacts are usually individuals who are
privy to certain information within an organization or business or
office, and supply the PI with information unbeknownst to that company,
business, or office. Informants generally have connections to the person
the private investigator cannot approach directly.
Once a private investigator has in mind a suspect or suspects, he must
next discover the evidence, which will hold up in a court of law. Every
police officer, private investigator, and detective wish that every
criminal they capture would simply confess his or her crimes. However,
for the majority of the times, crimes are solved and the criminal
sentenced due to the long hours and determinations of pure legwork on
the part of the police or private investigator.
