Mike Hammer, Jessica Fletcher and Dr. Quincy

There are many popular and famous private detectives that have dominated books, television and movies over the last five decades.

Mike Hammer was created in the 1940s by Mickey Spillane. Mike Hammer was an extreme private investigator that dominated Mickey Spillane’s books as the prime character. The first novel published with Hammer as the prime character was in 1947. Mickey Spillane has sold over 130 million books, most of them ‘Hammer books’ which are still wildly popular with anyone looking for a fistful of trouble with every turn of the page.

A popular television series for 12 seasons consisting of 263 full color episodes, was entitled Murder, She Wrote. The series starred Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher-a private investigator who seemed to have mystery follow her wherever she went. The first episode-a pilot movie entitled The Murder of Sherlock Holmes-aired on September 30, 1984-the last episode aired on May 19, 1996.

Another popular television show was Quincy, M.E. A different sort of private investigator show focusing on medicine. Dr. Quincy was a forensic coroner who investigated the causes of suspicious deaths. An interesting fact about the show is that Quincy’s first name was never revealed during the series that lasted for 7 seasons from 1976 to 1983.
