In Indiana, for example, an individual must demonstrate two years of
experience in a field similar to private investigation before obtaining
a private investigator’s license. In Florida, the individual must have
three years of demonstrated investigative experience. These experiences
can be in the form of an internship through a licensed investigative
agency or employment with an investigative government agency. Experience
as a police officer is not enough in Florida to obtain a license, unless
the officer has three years of documented investigative experience
through the police department. Connecticut, however, will accept ten
years of experience as a police officer, regardless of the type of work
performed during this time, in order to obtain a private investigator’s
license.
A police officer looking to get into the private investigation field,
however, needs to look into his state’s specific laws. Several states
have specific laws against police officers obtaining a private
investigator’s license. Therefore, a police officer looking to become a
private investigator might have to choose between being a police officer
or becoming a private investigator.
In Kansas, New York, Louisiana, and Wisconsin, a person applying for a
private investigator’s license does not need to have specific experience
in the private investigation field. Instead, an applicant for a private
investigator’s license needs to pass a written exam. In addition,
Louisiana requires a 40-hour class to be taken before the examination.
Several other states have specific education requirements, some of which
can include completion of private investigation courses or college
credits.
Background Checks
Most of the states that require licensing in order to become a private
investigator also perform background checks. If a background check
reveals previous unlawful activity, a license cannot be obtained.
